Become a PPT Member

Image Description: three PPT members in red shirts hold colorful, handpainted signs reading “transit moves us” and “bus lines = life lines” in blue, orange, and yellow. Behind them is a graphic red and yellow starburst.

At Pittsburghers for Public Transit, members are at the heart of everything we do. They’re the backbone of our movement, helping us build power, increase capacity to win our campaigns, and craft a loving community of transit riders and workers across Allegheny County.

If you’re looking to make the strongest impact in the movement for Transit Justice in our region, you’ve come to the right place.

What is a PPT member?

At PPT, we have two types of members:

  1. Dues-paying members
  2. Supporter members

Both types are critical to our work, helping us build community and win campaigns.

All members, regardless of type, are eligible to:

  • Run for positions on our Board of Directors
  • Vote in elections for our Board of Directors
  • Provide suggestions and feedback on our annual Strategic Plan

As a democratic, member-run grassroots union, we take these three member privileges very seriously. Everything we do is guided by our members, because we know that transit riders and workers are experts—in our transit system and in our communities.

Dues-paying members

Dues-paying members choose to support PPT financially, with a monthly or annual recurring donation.

Our dues-paying memberships are pay-what-you-can, with a minimum annual donation of just $2.75—the cost of a single PRT bus fare. We never want dues to prohibit participation in our membership program.

Once a person submits a qualifying payment, they will automatically be considered a Dues-paying member of PPT.

Supporter members

Since membership is such an important part of our organization, we open membership to everyone—regardless of if they are able to support us financially. Supporter members are those who commit to building PPT’s capacity by organizing in our campaigns, without an attached donation.

The following actions qualify someone for a Supporter membership at PPT:

  • Taking action with PPT—by submitting an online petition or advocacy form, volunteering, attending a rally or event—in a given year
  • AND attending one event, meeting, or rally (either in-person or virtual) in a given year
  • AND signing on to our Transit Bill of Rights, which details our organization’s values and vision for Transit Justice

Once a person meets these criteria, they will automatically be considered a Supporter member of PPT.
